Top 10 Tips and Strategies for Migraine Management at Home are based on my personal experience, same as my tips to manage at work.
#1 Identify Triggers
At home your triggers might increase as you have the added complexity of being close to your loved ones and your pets. Therefore you may experience a higher degree of anxiety and stress. Even feelings of shame and guilt could become part of your routine. Keep a diary to record when you experience migraines and what you were doing before they started. This will help you identify any triggers that may be causing your migraines.
#2 Create a Routine
Establish a regular sleep and wake-up schedule, exercise routine, and meal plan to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. This can help reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
#3 Manage Stress
Identify the activities that cause you stress and do them first. Once those are out of the way you will have a piece of mind. There’s a book I will recommend you to take a look: Eat that Frog, for Bryan Tracy the author, eating a frog is a metaphor for tackling your most challenging task—but also the one that can have the greatest positive impact on your life.
#4 Exercise
Try different activities, depending on your condition you might be able to incorporate high or low impact exercise routines. High-impact exercise may not be the best option for relieving migraines. In fact, high-impact exercise can sometimes trigger migraines in people who are prone to them. It is generally recommended to engage in low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga to help manage migraines. These types of exercises can help reduce stress, improve blood flow, and promote relaxation, which can all contribute to easing the pain and discomfort of migraines.
#5 Stay Hydrated
No excuses here, just get water in your system. Dehydration can trigger migraines. Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
#6 Use Essential Oils
Some essential oils, such as lavender and peppermint, can help relieve migraine symptoms. Apply them topically or diffuse them in the air to help ease the pain.
#7 Avoid Caffeine
Or better yet, remove it completely. Caffeine can trigger migraines in some people. Limit your intake of caffeine or avoid it altogether if it triggers your migraines.
#8 Create a Relaxing Environment
Create a relaxing environment at home by reducing noise and minimizing bright lights. This can help ease the pain and discomfort of migraines.
#9 Seek Support
Talk to your loved ones about your migraines and how they can support you. They can help you manage stress, keep a migraine diary, and create a relaxing environment.
#10 Incorporate Natural Supplements
There are many good options in the market to help you manage and prevent migraines. Try your best incorporating them in your daily routine, test them and stick to the ones that works for you. There are many over-the-counter and prescription medications available to help manage migraine attacks, only if you must.
