Mastering Balance: How Yoga Can Help Relieve Dizziness: I tried Yoga as a relaxing tool but realize balance postures helped my dizziness go away during the practice and a few hours after. I started then balancing on one foot everytime I needed relief, it felt like a manage to the vestibular system. There was something to be explored!
Yoga is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to help improve physical and mental well-being. Recently, research has shown that yoga can also be an effective tool for relieving dizziness.
How Yoga Can Help Relieve Dizziness
In my case and many others Vestibular Migraine dizziness is a terrible condition to live with. Yoga can help to relieve dizziness by improving balance, strengthening the inner ear muscles, and reducing stress and anxiety.
Key benefits of yoga for dizziness:
- Improving balance and stability: poses such as tree pose, warrior III, and eagle pose can help to strengthen the muscles in the legs and core to improve balance and stability.
- Improving inner ear function: Yoga can help to improve the function of the inner ear, which is responsible for maintaining balance.
- Reducing stress and anxiety: poses such as child’s pose, happy baby, and corpse pose can help to calm the mind and reduce tension in the body.
- Improving blood flow and circulation: poses such as downward-facing dog, forward fold, and legs-up-the-wall can help to improve blood flow and reduce dizziness caused by low blood pressure.
- Enhancing overall well-being: practicing yoga regularly can help to improve overall well-being by reducing stress and tension, improving physical fitness and flexibility and promoting mental clarity and mindfulness.
- Personalization: Yoga can be modified to suit the specific needs of an individual, making it an effective tool for dizziness relief. Try different poses and be mindful of how your body reacts, I found for me that warrior III is the best when feeling dizzy, provides immediate relief
- Non-invasive and natural: Yoga is a non-invasive and natural way to help relieve dizziness without the use of medication.
New to Yoga?
I would recommend to start right away but slowly and gradually build up your practice.
Here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Find a class or teacher that’s right for you: Look for a class or teacher that’s geared towards beginners. You can find classes at local yoga studios, gyms, or community centers. You can also find online classes and tutorials. I started watching Youtube videos there are many!
- Dress comfortably: You’ll want to wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive.
- Start with basic poses: As a beginner, it’s important to start with the basics. Focus on learning the proper alignment and form of basic poses such as downward-facing dog, mountain pose, and child’s pose. Try balancing poses once you feel comfortable with the basics.
- Take it easy: Remember that yoga is not a competition. Listen to your body and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
- Be patient: Yoga takes time and practice. Don’t expect to master every pose right away. Be patient with yourself and focus on your progress rather than perfection.
- Pay attention to your breath: Breath is a very important part of yoga practice, so try to focus on your breath during each pose. It will also relax you!
- Practice regularly: To see the best results, it’s important to practice yoga regularly. Aim for at least once or twice a week, and gradually increase the frequency and duration of your practice as you become more comfortable with the poses.
By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to a safe and enjoyable yoga practice. Hopefully relief for your dizziness, so remember to listen to your body and have fun!
