Great Self-Care Options for Migraine Sufferers

Great Self-Care Options for Migraine Sufferers based on my experience are: Enjoy small and tasteful snacks, Long Hot shower, Square breathing, Stretching, Drinking natural flavour water and Use Diffuser with my favourite smell “Lavender”.

Healthy snacks

Having a small snack can be a helpful strategy for soothing migraine symptoms for several reasons:

  • Stabilize Blood Sugar: Migraines can be triggered by low blood sugar levels, and a small snack can help stabilize your blood sugar, reducing the likelihood of a migraine attack.
  • Provide Quick Energy: especially if it contains complex carbohydrates and a little protein, which can help prevent migraines caused by low energy levels.
  • Reduce Dehydration: a snack that contains fluids, such as fruit or yogurt, can help reduce dehydration and prevent migraines.
  • Alleviate Nausea: Many people with migraines experience nausea, and a small low in fat and high in carbohydrates, such as crackers or rice cakes, can be especially helpful.
  • Avoid Triggers: you may have the tendency to reach out for food for comfort, having healthy options available can help avoid trigger foods such as chocolate, red wine, or aged cheese, that can make their migraines worse.

Hot Shower

Having a hot shower can be a helpful strategy for soothing migraine symptoms for several reasons:

  • Relieve Pain: The heat from the hot water can help increase blood flow and relieve pain. The heat also has a soothing effect on the muscles, which can help relieve tension and reduce pain.
  • Reduce Stress and Relax: The warm, soothing sensation of a hot shower can also help promote relaxation and reduce stress.
  • Alleviate Sinus Pressure: by loosening up the mucus in the sinuses and improving drainage.
  • Improve Sleep: The relaxing and soothing effects of a hot shower can also help improve sleep, which can be beneficial for people with migraines who have trouble sleeping.
  • Release Endorphins: The heat from a hot shower can stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals.

Square Breathing Technique

Square breathing is a simple and effective technique for reducing stress and promoting relaxation, which can be helpful for people with migraines. Here are the steps for practicing square breathing:

  • I usually do it when laying down in a dark room. Find a quiet place to sit or lie down where you won’t be disturbed.
  • Breathe in deeply through your nose for four counts, hold your breath for four counts, then exhale through your mouth for four counts. Repeat this pattern four times.
  • Focus on your breathing, and try to clear your mind of any distractions or worries. Imagine a square in your mind, and visualize yourself breathing in and out at each of the four corners.
  • Repeat this pattern as needed until you feel calm and relaxed.

The benefits of practicing square breathing include:

  • Reduces Stress
  • Promotes Relaxation by visualization exercises
  • Improves Breathing and increase oxygen levels
  • Increases Focus and reduce distractions
  • Improves Sleep quality

Stretching

Stretching can be a helpful strategy for soothing migraine symptoms for several reasons:

  • Relieve Tension in the muscles and reduce the pain, I usually get neck pain with it. Neck stretches help alleviate the tension.
  • Improve Blood Flow you can help bring oxygen and other essential nutrients to the brain, reducing headache pain and fatigue.
  • Increase Flexibility, which can improve posture and reduce the tension in the neck and shoulders, two common trigger points for migraines.
  • Alleviate Sinus Pressure by loosening up the muscles in the neck and face, stretching can help improve sinus drainage and reduce pressure.

Flavoured Water

Drinking water, especially natural flavor water, can be beneficial for soothing migraine symptoms in several ways:

  • Hydration, staying hydrated can help maintain proper fluid balance in the body, reducing the symptoms of migraines.
  • Reduces Inflammation, specially natural flavor waters contain antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation in the body. I love peppermint and cucumber.
  • Relaxation: some hot teas are also a good option like chamomile or lavender water, contain natural relaxation properties.
  • Aids Digestion: Drinking water can help aid digestion and prevent constipation, also help regulate blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of migraines.

Lavender Oil

Smelling lavender essential oil can have several benefits for soothing migraine symptoms:

  • Relaxation: Smelling lavender essential oil can help soothe the mind, promoting relaxation.
  • Pain Relief: When inhaled, it can help reduce headache pain and improve overall well-being.
  • Reduces Inflammation: the beta-caryophyllene in the oil acts as a natural anti-inflammatory.
  • Improves Sleep: Lavender has been shown to improve sleep driven by its relaxing properties..
