Reduce Stress to prevent vestibular migraines

In my last blog I started talking about major triggers that cause vestibular migraine attacks. Today I will focus on how to Reduce Stress to prevent vestibular migraines. Therefore it is very important to understand the tools to control, diminish and manage it.

I will share some of my stressors and the tools I used to manage them.

My own expectations

Oddly enough I am the main cause of my stress. I have a very competitive mindset and unfortunately a need to be always the best. I had to do a deep root analysis of what caused this and I identified I have Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD). RSD is when you experience severe emotional pain because of a failure or feeling rejected. People with this disorder compensate for the fear of failure or rejection by going all-out or striving for perfectionism. However, the downside of this is Stress and Anxiety. I will talk in more depth about this disorder in future posts stay tuned.

Tools Reduce Stress to prevent vestibular migraines:

  • Stop and think: might seem obvious but most of the time we just don’t realize what we are actually thinking.
  • Track your thoughts: either journaling or at least set aside time to think about your day. Try to find out what were you thinking prior to a stressful feeling or situation.
  • Self care, in my case this truly means rest when needed.
  • Exercise vigorously and consistently. This provides a way to release releases endorphins and dopamine creating a very natural way to release tension and relax.
  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Good nutrients will give you the boost of energy you might be lacking. Also is important to know that refined carbohydrates and sugar causes a spike in your blood sugar. This prompts your body to produce a surge of insulin to quickly bring it down. This spike-and-crash cycle can leave you feeling tired and cranky.
  • This is a big one: Let go of problems you can’t control. Easier said than done. A more practical approach to accomplish this is practice mindfulness meditation to stay in the present moment. Using a positive affirmation or focusing on the areas that are going well in your life provides inspiration and a way to control negative thoughts.
